Dear Alumni Engineer,

For the tradition to live on and in the process, help both the university and our country, the College and the U.P. Alumni Engineers have come up with a roster of activities to lend significance to this centennial milestone. These include: the building of an engineering dormitory; the institution of scholarships and professorial chairs; the conduct of continuing lecture series; the launch and running of the Ekot jeep; a proclamation of the 100 Outstanding Alumni Engineers; and the holding of a RetroEngg Week, a motorcade, a marathon, a golf  tournament and fellowships.  These will be capped by the homecoming on 13 June 2010.
To bring fruition to all these plans, we will need your support and the support of our other alumni engineers who have all benefited from our UP Engineering education and in appreciation, would like to give something back to the College.  May we invite you to be part of all these by your active participation in the activities and by donating PhP10,000 to the centennial celebration.  In return, you will be entitled to a Centennial passport that will install your name in perpetuity at the lifetime Centennial Wall of the UP Alumni Engineers Centennial Building; entitle you to free copies of the Centennial coffee table book and the annual Ingenium publication; and give you free access to the following Centennial events, RetroEngg Week, the 100 Outstanding Alumni Engineers awards; and the grand homecoming;

The College first opened its doors to prospective engineers in 1910 when the College was then located in Padre Faura, Manila.  Now, almost 100 years later, the College boasts of the Melchor Hall in the Diliman campus dedicated to the molding of engineers through high quality education and teaching professionals.
To date, the College has produced 16,350 graduates, many of which are touted to be the best and brightest engineers in the country.  Many too have established strong roots and are highly esteemed in foreign shores.  To pay tribute to these great minds, the UP Alumni Engineers (UPAE) conceived the search for the “100 Outstanding Alumni Engineers of the University of the Philippines,” for the contemporary and posthumous achievers of the College of Engineering.
So far, forty-one (41) alumni have been proclaimed.  They are virtually who’s who in the academe, the government, and the construction, banking, manufacturing industries. They include :

Green Foundations

Backhoes digging the ground on which to build building foundations are a common sight in the metropolis. It’s the Civil Engineers job to plan for this.

What are not so common are spades digging the ground on which to plant tree seedlings; and Civil Engineers—I imagine them in hardhats—doing this good deed.

This is what the University of the Philippines ACES Alumni Association did this November (sans the hardhats).

They’ve turned “green”; and that is all good for the earth, for us.
